After almost seven years, vacation rentals in Phuket are thriving once again, thanks to the resilient nature of the Thais who were able to rebuild after that horrific disaster. When Phuket was hit by the “Boxing Day tsunami” in 2004, there was extensive damage that residents and tourists alike cannot comprehend how Phuket will be able to get back on her feet.
But Thailand did recover; and it is back again to being a premier tourist destination with new vacation rentals sprouting up. The Indian Ocean Earthquake of 2004 killed thousands of people and caused damage in eleven other countries. It was a natural disaster of unprecedented proportions and was way beyond comprehension for the tourists who witnessed the event. The massive tidal wave slammed into Phuket at 9:20 am, the time when tourists have just woken up and taking advantage of the sun before it became too hot.
Patong, the major beach town in Phuket became flooded and all the shops, hotels and vacation rentals along the beach were damaged, swept away or destroyed. The waters receded back to sea, carrying the dead, whole houses and tons of debris. Businesses suffered extreme damage, including major stores and restaurants.
In spite of the extensive damage, the main body of administrative and emergency services of Phuket were not along the coast, so they were mainly untouched. This is one of the main reasons why Phuket was able to quickly recover. Added to this is the concern of tourists and visitors who went back to the island conquering their fears to help restore tourism to the area.
