Holiday Tips: Sampling the Local Cuisine

From seeing the sights, to immersing oneself in another's culture, being in foreign soil is always an exciting experience. And no trip should be complete without savoring the local cuisine that a certain place has to offer. They say that eating food lets your stomach travel to other places, so by that very logic, partaking in the local cuisine of your holiday spot would add a whole new dimension to your vacation.

The hotel you're staying in might be a good place to start your gastronomical voyage. Chances are the hotel café might offer some of the local delicacies. But don't just be content in staying within your hotel - be adventurous! Explore! Ask some of the hotel staff or the local populace for any known restaurants or diners that tourists often frequent. Every place is bound to have a specialty, and you should sample it one way or another.

If you're feeling extra bold, why not try some of the food sold on the street stalls and corner shops. They might not be the house's specialty but they should give you a better taste of the local setting. And who knows, maybe you'll be in for a surprise treat.

Don't be afraid to try out something new, particularly food of the non-conventional type. Fried octopus from China, ox-brain from Persia, haggis (sheep's heart) from Scotland - nothing should be off-limits for the adventuring eater.

These trips not only apply to food but to local beverages as well. If you find yourself in the vineyards of France or Italy, don't pass up the opportunity to go around town whilst tasting the local wines or driving from bar to bar in Germany in search of the best local beer.

Food related festivities might also be a good starting point to plan your trip around. Oktoberfest in Germany, Lechon Fiesta (roasted pig) in the Philippines, Puerto Vallarta Festival in Mexico - these are just some many festivals around the world dedicated to satiating your gastronomical needs.
